Sweep & Vacuum
Sweep or vacuum your tile floors a couple of times a week. Sand and grit can dull and scratch the surface. Once you’ve removed the dirt, you’re ready to mop. Mix a mild detergent with hot water and apply with a rag or chamois mop instead of a sponge mop. A sponge mop pushes dirty water into the grout and soils it. Change your bucket of cleaning solution often so you won’t have a dirty mop that leaves a cloudy film of dirt on the floor. If you do end up with a hazy film on your tile floor, remove with an all-purpose cleaner. Make sure it’s non-abrasive so it won’t scratch the floor. You can also make your own cleaner by mixing lemon juice or vinegar with hot water. Apply it to the floor and then buff dry with a clean cloth. You can use a towel that you push over the floor with your foot.

No Wax Floors
Wash them with a cleaner made specifically for no-wax floors, following the directions on the container. If you have older vinyl that requires waxing, clean it with warm water and detergent. Dampen a mop or sponge with the mixture and rub the floor just enough to loosen the dirt. Try not to rub off the wax because you will just have to reapply it. Rinse with clean, cool water—no matter what the soap label says about not needing rinsing—otherwise you’ll leave a residue on the floor.

Liquid Stains
Always take care with liquid stains — over-blotting could push the spill further into the carpet fibres, making the stain worse. Treat stains as soon as they occur using a carpet cleaner, which will lift the liquid straight up.
For badly stained areas, you might want to use a pre-treatment. This will help shift the stain from beneath, making it ready for the carpet cleaner to lift it away.
